A Simple Yet Very Effective Basketball Drill for Post Players

With the use of the 3 point line it is rare to see a true low post player who is great with his back to the basket. We still see some in the college game but the best young college players always bolt to the pros where they play against the best but don't always take the time to learn the game before that level.

Right Angle Drill

I tell all young coaches that if they want to really develop a solid young post player they need to teach that player a couple points.

Right Angle Drill

1. Protect the ball: Young big men are notorious for putting the ball on the floor where little guys simply take it from them. All big players need to first learn how important the basketball is and how they can protect it. Don't be afraid to teach them to get those elbows up with the ball at the chin to protect it.

2. Finish with contact: How many uncontested shots take place at the basket? Not many. In fact, the contact that is now allowed is at an all time high in my opinion. Good big players need to get comfortable with contact around the hoop.

The drill that I want to cover is very simple but the principles learned from it are invaluable. Let's look at the drill that I call "Post Contact".

Start with one player under the basket as a defender. His sole purpose is to be all over the post player when he gets the ball and goes to shoot it. This player can be armed with a pillow or a soft pad. I've had coaches use basketballs as well but the idea is to use the object to lean or push against the offensive player once he gets the ball.

Take another player and have him be the offensive post player and put him right down on the block. He is to maintain foot position above the low block to give him a good angle at the basket. The coach stands out front and passes the ball to the post. The post does a simple drop step to the basket and attempts to make the basket. The defensive player is doing all he can to bump the post and make the shot difficult. The idea here is to get the post player used to the contact from all different shots including drop steps, jump hooks, turn-around jump shots and others.

Once that is mastered bring in another defender who will hassle the post player once the ball has been passed in. This is to simulate the guard trying to steal the ball from the post. The post needs to learn to be strong with the ball and value it. The guard should be aggressive but not too much because elbows should be used to protect the ball. The post then tries to score as with the defender on the other end working to make the shot tougher.

Does this simulate a real game situation? Of course it does in a lot of ways. Never be afraid to make practice harder than the game is.
